After Seven Years, Katy Perry Is Leaving American Idol
Pop star Katy Perry is reportedly not returning as a judge for American Idol next season. This marks the end of her seven-year run with the series.
Perry has been a judge for American Idol since season 16 in 2018. She will return for the series’s 22 season, which premieres on ABC on February 18.
According to USA Today, Perry announced her exit on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on February 12. “I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for Idol. I mean, I love Idol so much. I know. It’s connected me with the heart of America. But I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat,” she stated in response to a question from Kimmel about how long she planned to stay with the series.
When asked about how fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan felt about her decision, Perry indicated that she hadn’t told them yet. “Well, they’ll find out tonight!” she quipped.
According to Billboard, it’s rumored that Perry plans to use her newfound free time to work on new music. During her interview with Kimmel, the “Firework” singer stated, “Let’s just say, I’m creating a space for my new wingspan.”
Last year, Litmus Music acquired the rights to several studio albums released by Capitol Records, including her Grammy-nominated Teenage Dream. Billboard’s sources revealed that Litmus paid a significant amount for her stake in the royalties and publishing rights to all five of her studio albums. This could hint at preparations for a new LP since her most recent album, Smile, was released four years ago.
Fans are speculating about this theory as well. The overall reaction to Perry’s departure from the show was positive because people hope that she will now have time to work on a new album. X users expressed excitement over a potential sixth project from the artist.
