Madame Web debuted on Valentine’s Day and is currently at $26.2 million in gross domestic box office sales.

The latest addition to the Sony Spider-Man Verse grossed almost $18 million in the United States over its three-day opening weekend. Six days later, the film fell short of nearly $27 million, hitting the record lowest opening for any Spider-Man film. The film sits below other Spider-Man character spinoffs that were met with high criticism, such as Morbius, who had a $39.1 million opening in 2022.

Madame Web is in second place at the box office, trying to catch up with Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love biopic. The biopic earned $51 million after spending six days at the box office and $29 million internationally. Madame Web generated a profit of $25.7 million internationally but still fell behind.

Madame Web takes viewers inside her web as a suspenseful thriller that focuses on Cassandra Webb, portrayed by Dakota Johnson. Webb, a character in the Spider-Man universe who possesses abilities such as telepathy, clairvoyance, and prescience, can see into the future and prevent crimes from occurring. Essentially an aid to Spider-Man and other spider heroes, the film falls short of including the iconic superhero and references to his mother and uncle: Mary and Ben Parker.

Regarding reviews and critical acclaim, Madame Web failed amongst the Marvel superhero fanbase. The film received a 3.8 out of 10 rating on IMDb, lower than Morbius, who received a 5.2 out of 10, making it the worst-reviewed Spider-Man Sony Verse film. After its first opening, the film also sits at 13 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, again making it the worst-reviewed Spider-Man spinoff film.

While fans were to watch other Spider-Man characters in the film, such as Spider-Woman (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben Parker (Adam Scott), they were left disappointed by choppy editing, a congested plot, and absurd dialogue written with the absence of any source material.

IGN gave the film a 5 out of 10-star review, calling it “mediocre” and “packs a lot into a nearly two-hour runtime when it really, really doesn’t need to.”

Fans across social media platforms, such as TikTok have been curious to see the film to see how “bad” it truly is. Fans stated, “Bad, publicity is still publicity,” which persuaded them to see the film. “It got me in the theater. It worked.” one user stated.

We may not be able to predict the future, but hopefully, Madame Web will see an increase in numbers in the upcoming weeks before it leaves the box office.
