Billie Eilish Sets New Record at the Oscars
At the Oscars this Sunday, Billie Eilish, at 22, had set a record for becoming the youngest person ever to receive two awards.
Eilish has been taking home awards left and right at multiple awards shows due to her involvement in writing and singing the song “What Was I Made For,” which was used in one of the most powerful scenes in the film Barbie. This scene moved audience members around the globe, and many fans say it is one of the most human, emotional, and beautiful songs ever written.
This weekend, she received an Academy Award for the song which became her second Oscar win, naming her the youngest two-time Oscar winner in history. In addition to winning an Academy Award, she has also won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, two Grammy’s for Song of the Year, and Best Song Written for Visual Media.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, stars of the upcoming film Wicked, presented Eilish with the award. Eilish and her brother went up to the stage to make their speech, with Eilish running to hug her friend and Barbie costar, America Ferrera, on the way up. In her acceptance speech, she thanked Greta Gerwig for making her a part of the film and supporting her. She expressed, “I’m so grateful for this song and for this movie and the way that it made me feel. This goes out to everyone that was affected by the movie and how incredible it is.”

The songwriter has received numerous other accolades for her successful music, including nine Grammy wins and three Billboard Music awards. Furthermore, she had also written a song with the same name for the James Bond film, No Time To Die. In 2022, she was nominated for a Golden Globe and Academy Award for her work on that film, taking home the win for Best Original Song. She also took home a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
Eilish recently ventured out into the world of television, adding actress to her résume. She appeared on screen for the first time last year as Eva, a character in the 2023 horror television show Swarm, working alongside co-stars Chloe Bailey, Dominique Fishback, and Rory Culkin. At the People’s Choice Awards this year, she won TV Performance of the Year for her breakout role.

Within a few hours after the Oscars show ended, “What Was I Made For?” climbed to number 1 on iTunes for the first time since its release. Eilish’s numerous achievements that night did not go unnoticed, with fans immediately pouring into social media during the show to congratulate the singer and share their excitement for their favorite artist.
Eilish performed the song on piano during the show with her brother and collaborator, Finneas. The performance moved the audience to tears as the camera captured the emotional reactions of the Barbie cast, including Margot Robbie, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, and Greta Gerwig.
