It has been revealed that a new Boondock Saints film is in the works, and the original stars, Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery, will return to their roles.

This will be the third film in the action franchise after the original cult favorite The Boondock Saints was released in 1999, with the second film, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, following in 2009. The film is categorized as a vigilante action thriller.

It follows two Irish Catholic twin brothers, Conner (Flanery) and Murphy MacManus (Reedus), who are sick of the crime taking over their city of Boston. They decide to hunt down and kill notorious gangsters to serve justice, but an FBI agent (William Dafoe) is hot on their trail, although the press and public see them as heroes. The film was well-loved for its amazing script and dialogue, with the right amount of humor.

Dragonfly Films currently owns the rights to the film. Thunder Road Pictures, the producer of the John Wick franchise, will be partnering to work on this project. Director Troy Duffy was the director of the first two films, with them being the only two films he has ever directed, and he had quite a success for his first time. Unfortunately, he will be stepping down as director for the upcoming picture, and a director is still needed.

Todd Myers, a producer of Dragonfly Films, talks about how it has been his dream to add to the story since he saw the very first film. He has been talking to Reedus and Flanery about the possibility for the last decade. Reedus is also thrilled to be working on this project again with a new crew that can bring new parts of the story back to life.

The first film’s theatrical release originally did not succeed at the box office because it was limited to only five theatres in America. But after its re-release, word of mouth, and home video release, it grossed fifty million dollars in sales. The film’s success led to the sequel in 2009, and in 2003, they also released Overnight, a documentary on making the film.

It will be exciting to see Reedus and Flanery back on screen after decades, reprising their iconic roles. Reedus has recently spent the last decade as Daryl Dixon on the post-apocalyptic drama series The Walking Dead, as well as his spinoff dedicated to his character, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which was released in late 2023. The actor can also be seen in Blade II and his current documentary show, Ride With Norman Reedus, where he explores different cities on his motorcycle.

While Flanery is best known for his role in the film, he can also be seen in PowderNefarious, and Indiana Jones in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Many believe the actor deserves an Oscar for his performances, including his role in Nefarious. In 2019, he won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Digital Daytime Drama Series as Ty Garrett in The Bay.

In 2021, it was confirmed that we would be getting another installment, but now we officially know that the lead actors will be returning and the director, Duffy, is not. Instead, Duffy will continue the story by writing a series of books.

While news awaits on the upcoming release, fans can watch the first film, available to stream on Peacock.
