Rudy Mancuso: Starring in and Directing His Innovative Debut Feature
Rudy Mancuso gained recognition for his creative endeavors on Vine and YouTube, showcasing a diverse and imaginative career. Now, he is making his directorial debut.
Mancuso is a multifaceted artist, captivating audiences with his inventive storytelling and musical talent. The internet personality’s social media acts include singing performances, puppet skits, and poignant live-action shorts complemented by his piano compositions.
Música is loosely based on Mancuso’s life and marks his directorial debut, starring himself and Camila Mendes. Like Mancuso, the main character has synesthesia. The plot follows Rudy (Mancuso) trying to manage his life and the complicated relationships that come with it.
Furthermore, the film is a coming-of-age story. Rudy learns to deal with the pressure from his family, friends, relationships, and Brazilian culture. He juggles the needs of three important women in his life: Haley (Francesca Reale), his college girlfriend; Isabella (Mendes), a charismatic fish seller; and Maria (Maria Mancuso), his assertive Brazilian mother.
In addition, Maria, portrayed by Mancuso’s real mother, has a unique way of bringing potential daughters-in-law into their home by turning their living room into a makeshift singles bar, complete with caipirinhas served with paper umbrellas.
Amidst the chaos, Rudy occasionally seeks solace and advice from an unexpected source, a shawarma truck operator portrayed by J.B. Smoove. However, this advice often comes with a twist, as the operator, when under the influence, takes on the persona of a trickster sprite.
Moreover, in the trailer, Rudy expresses, “For as long as I can remember, everyday regular sounds, I turn into rhythm.” Additionally, his synesthesia becomes a challenge as it causes him to become easily distracted by his surroundings, leading to his girlfriend breaking up with him due to his inability to focus.
Camila Mendes, known primarily for her portrayal of Veronica Lodge in the CW series Riverdale, embodies Rudy’s new girlfriend in the film. Interestingly, Mendes and Mancuso are also dating in real life, adding a layer of authenticity to their on-screen chemistry.
