Katy Perry Teases New Music After American Idol Departure
After ending her seven-season tenure as an American Idol judge, Katy Perry is ready to return to the stage with new music.
The American Idol season 22 finale on May 19 was filled with tearful goodbyes for the “Hot N’ Cold” singer. After being a judge alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan for seven seasons, Perry feels that American Idol will always have a place in her heart. “I loved everything I got to experience and learn,” she told ET’s Danny Directo in an interview. “And I feel really close to my country, really proud.”

American Idol’s season 22 finale included many heartfelt tributes, both to Perry and from Perry herself. In honor of the “Firework” singer’s departure, the top 12 female contestants, including season 22 winner Abi Carter, performed a medley of Perry’s greatest hits, including “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” and “Dark Horse.” Perry also graced the American Idol stage alongside contestant Jack Blocker to perform her song “What Makes a Woman.” During the performance, Perry wore a massive dress covered in the faces of all the contestants that have been on Idol over the last seven seasons as a tribute to all of them and to the series.

For Perry, stepping away from the judge chair doesn’t mean stepping away from the spotlight — far from it, in fact. On Jimmy Kimmel Live, the “I Kissed a Girl” singer revealed that she will be performing at the “Rock In Rio” music festival in September, and that this year she will be “creating space for [her] new wingspan.” Perry later surprises interviewers after the American Idol finale, stating that she is “pregnant” with her next album.

Fans are beyond excited for Perry’s musical comeback. Since the release of Perry’s most recent album, Smile, in 2020, fans have long awaited the “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” singer’s return to the studio. Now, with Perry becoming “The One That Got Away” from American Idol, the hype for the artist’s next album has just begun.
