The fifth film in the Shrek franchise will be released 25 years after the first and 15 years since Shrek 4, which grossed over $752 million during its time at the box office.
In 2023, Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination and creative partner to Dreamworks for Shrek 5, discussed rebooting animated sequels following The Super Mario Bros. Movie. About Shrek 5, he expressed, “It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with ‘Mario,’ where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honor those core elements.”
With recent reboots in the last few years from fan favorites, like Despicable Me, Kung Fu Panda, Hotel Transylvania, and now Shrek, fans can reconnect with beloved characters from the past.

Eddie Murphy, the voice of Donkey, recently revealed in an interview that the production for Shrek 5 began “five months ago.” He stated, “I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it. This year we’ll finish it up. And it’ll be another Shrek that’s coming out.”
Murphy also mentioned the works of a spin-off film for his character, similar to Antonio Banderas’ spin-off with the Puss In Boots franchise. “And there’s a Donkey. Donkey is gonna have his own movie,” he shared.
Shrek fans have reacted excitedly and plan to be in theaters in 2026 to see Donkey, Fiona, and of course Shrek.
