How Would Andrew Garfield Return to New Spider-Man Films?
Andrew Garfield revealed whether or not he would ever consider reprising his role as Spider-Man once again.
At the Middle East Film & Comic Con in Abu Dhabi, Garfield addressed one of the biggest questions on his fans’ minds: will he ever be cast as Spider-Man again?
“I loved playing Spider-Man,” he stated. “I would love to play the character again in some capacity, but I think it would have to be very weird. I would want to do something very unique and offbeat and surprising, kind of like the creative freedom they have with the animated Spider-Verse movies.”
Garfield was initially cast as the hero in The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012 alongside rising star Emma Stone. The film was a huge success, which built high anticipation for fans when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 dropped in 2014.
The films, directed by Marc Webb, were set to be featured in a trilogy. However, several issues arose, leading to the eventual shelving of the third film.
The We Live in Time actor is the second of three modern-day stars to portray Spider-Man. Tobey Maguire starred in the first Spider-Man trilogy, with his films released in 2002, 2004, and 2007.
In 2017, the beginning of another trilogy following the webbed superhero emerged. Tom Holland was cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming, featuring alongside Zendaya.
In Holland’s films, Garfield reprised his role as Spider-Man, starring alongside Holland and Maguire. The trio each played their respective versions of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In October, Garfield was asked a similar question regarding his renewal of the beloved superhero. He told Esquire he was open to the idea if it felt right.
“For sure, I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing,” he stated, “if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into.”
A fourth film for Holland’s character was recently announced. Garfield was clear about where he stands when asked if he would star in this film.
“I’m gonna disappoint you,” he stated. “Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to release in theaters on July 31, 2026.
