The Sweet Tribute to Cameron Boyce You Might’ve Missed in Happy Gilmore 2

Happy Gilmore 2 hit Netflix on Friday night and has already shot to the top of the streamer’s film charts. Sure, part of that might be the ever-growing appetite for nostalgia, but it also helps that the cast is stacked with some of today’s biggest names: Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce, Margaret Qualley, and Marcello Hernandez, to name a few.

While Easter eggs are scattered throughout the film, one in particular struck a chord with fans. Early in the film, Gilmore (Sandler) reintroduces himself and walks toward the kitchen window, and a TV can be seen in the background. On the screen is an episode of Jessie, featuring a scene with the late Cameron Boyce, one of Sandler’s former co-stars and close family friends.

Boyce portrayed Sandler’s son in Grown Ups 1 and 2, and was set to star in his Halloween film Hubie Halloween, but unexpectedly passed away from SUDEP Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) shortly before filming.

At the time of his passing, the 50 First Dates actor wrote, “‪Too young. Too sweet. Too funny. Just the nicest, most talented, and most decent kid around. Loved that kid. Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world. Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave to us. So much more was on the way. All our hearts are broken. Thinking of your amazing family and sending our deepest condolences.‬”

The tribute didn’t go unnoticed. Fans quickly took to social media to share their emotional reactions, praising Sandler for the subtle nod and calling the moment “thoughtful” and “heartwarming.”

Happy Gilmore 2 follows Gilmore as he returns to golf after retiring to pay for his daughter’s ballet lessons. As the film tops the charts, viewers are appreciating the chance to spend more time with the beloved characters from the original and see a ton of new faces to reignite the story, one calling it “A hole-in-one for nostalgia.”

Happy Gilmore 2 is out on Netflix now.
