On Thursday, July 28, Netflix released the official trailer of Blonde, an NC-17 fictional biopic staring Ana de Armas as the legendary actress Marilyn Monroe. The movie, directed by Andrew Dominik, was adapted from the novel of the same name written by Joyce Carol Oates. Viewers can access the full film on Netflix on September 23.

Besides de Armas, Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale, and Julianne Nicholson will join and star in the film as well. Together, they will mold Oates’ fictional story of Marilyn Monroe, offering audiences a glimpse into her journey from her upbringing as the poor Norma Jeane Mortenson to her seemingly glorious life as the Hollywood icon.

In this fictional biopic, a three-dimensional Marilyn Monroe will emerge. Ana de Armas told Netflix Queue, “we (the production team) wanted to tell the human side of her story. Fame is what made Marilyn the most visible person in the world, but it also made Norma the most invisible.” The film will show that behind the glitz and glamour, Monroe was a tremendously complex human being.

In the trailer, Monroe (de Armas) is constantly surrounded by crowds, flashing lights, and also rich, powerful men. She gets on the stage, sings, and performs, again and again – a never-ending cycle. She is always glamourous, but also always frustrated. At one point in the trailer, Monroe comes crashing down. She screams in her dressing room and even scratches her face in one scene. In another scene, while at dinner with Joe DiMaggio (Cannavale) she states in a trembling voice, “I can’t face doing another scene with Marilyn Monroe.”

Ana de Armas’ performance looks impeccable throughout the trailer. Fans are ecstatic and eager to watch the full movie. One Twitter user commented, “She looks vulnerable in this trailer. It’s giving possible Oscar nominations.”

While the performance is much anticipated, fans still need to wait several weeks to view Blonde. Before reaching Netflix, the film will first be shown at the Venice Film Festival in late August. Then a few weeks later, on September 23, viewers across the world may watch the film on Netflix.
