Taylor Swift won Best Music Video for her short film “All Too Well” at the 2023 Grammys, adding to her long list of accomplishments. The “Lavender Haze” singer, 33, beat Adele, BTS, Doja Cat, Kendrick Lamar, and Harry Styles.

Swift wasn’t present to accept her award but tweeted out her gratitude, writing, “I can’t put into words what this means to me. For the @RecordingAcad and my peers to acknowledge me as a director, and in doing so, acknowledge my work to try and reclaim my music… I’m blown away. Thank you to all the fans who willed this to happen.”

“All Too Well” is speculated to be about Taylor Swift’s relationship with actor Jake Gyllenhaal. The couple briefly dated for three months in late 2010, when she was 20 and he 29. The two broke up in early 2011. The 10-minute ballad rehashed the downfall of their relationship, making jabs at the Nightcrawler star, primarily for manipulating her with his charm on a young girl and attacking his taste for younger women. The 15-minute long film brings these lyrics to life, where Stranger Things star, Sadie Sink and The Maze Runner actor, Dylan O’Brien, embody what is assumed to be Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal.

During an interview with Variety, the now Grammy-winning director revealed the inspiration behind the “All Too Well” short film

“In my mind, there’s this period of time in the ’70s where we started seeing these romantic films where these two characters are so beautifully, intimately woven together, and then they just unravel the braid right in front of you and you just can’t believe it, like ‘The Way We Were,’ ‘Love Story,’ ‘Kramer vs. Kramer.’ And so those are the ones that I think because I love those films…just hitting those emotional touchstones that those films just punch me in the stomach and hit,” she explained.

The song was re-released on the album, Red (Taylor’s Version) on November 21, 2021. The reason the Grammy-winning artist redid her album, in addition to Fearless was simple, she wanted to take back what was hers.

According to CNN, Swift didn’t own the rights to her music prior to 2019. Her original record label, Big Machine Records, was bought by Scooter Braun. After refusing to sign an NDA that would prohibit her from discussing the dispute with her and the new Big Record Machine owner, thus, leading her to leave the company and sign on with Universal Music Group. Once November 20, 2020, rolled around, Swift was legally permitted to redo her songs, adding her own flare and style.
