Lorde has officially returned to the music scene. On March 28, the two-time Grammy winner released a cover of “Take Me to the River” by Talking Heads for the upcoming album, Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Stop Making Sense Tribute Album. The project comes after the A24 rerelease of the 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense, restored in 4K. The film, directed by Jonathan Demme, highlights four consecutive nights of Talking Heads performances to promote their 1983 album Speaking in Tongues.

The tribute album features sixteen artists, including ParamoreMiley Cyrus, Girl in Red, and Kevin Abstract. Lorde wrote a note detailing her first exposure to Talking Heads and her process of recording the cover: “This version of the first Talking Heads song I ever heard was done in a few days in Echo Park, L.A. with my friend Jimmy…We did it fast. I didn’t let myself tidy it up too much; it had to feel young and imperfect.”

Following the release of the cover, Lorde took to her Instagram story to promote the single. The “Royals” singer also surprised fans with an update on her upcoming album. She captioned a picture of herself on a patio, “Stepping away from my own project for a couple ended up giving me a huge piece of the puzzle. Had just gone dark, was feeling returned to, masc n femme in balance, electrified and at peace. Thank you for listening…magic to come.”

Lorde’s next album will be her fourth. Her last effort, Solar Power, was released in August 2021. She wrote and produced each song on the album alongside 10-time Grammy-winning producer Jack Antonoff. The pair also worked on her sophomore album, Melodrama. The album is three times platinum in New Zealand, where the singer is from, and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 60 Grammy Awards. Lorde first made waves in the music scene in 2013 with her single “Royals” from her debut album, Pure Heroine. Topping the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks, the song won Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 56 Grammy Awards.

Though Lorde has yet to announce when fans can expect new music, they can now listen to her “Take Me to the River” cover on all streaming services and below. Fans can also sign up for her email newsletter, which she occasionally sends updates to.
