Paramount Pictures recently announced the 2025 reboot of the Scary Movie film franchise in partnership with Miramax.

The franchise’s first film, Scary Movie, was released in July 2000 on a $19 million budget and grossed $278 million worldwide. Written and directed by the Wayans brothers, it portrayed a group of teenagers being stalked by a masked killer after accidentally killing a man while driving. Scary Movie was created as a parody of other horror films and gained enough popularity to make four more after it.

The last film was created in 2013 and is finally being rebooted after a decade. It will be made as a part of Paramount and Miramax’s first-look partnership, and the former will handle distribution while the latter will finance it.

While fans are excited to hear the good news, many are calling for the return of the original cast, including  Regina Hall, Marlon Wayans, and Anna Faris. Wayans and his brothers were forced to part with the film series after the first two installments, and in 2022, he told his side of the story. “We didn’t walk away from a franchise. They didn’t want to make our deal, and they snatched it,” Wayans stated in a Comedy Gold Minds podcast episode. “We never walked away from our franchise that we created. It was taken and us being the creatives that we are were like ‘Alright, bet.'”

Wayans continued to explain that after the first two films, the Weinstein Company refused to pay them their worth and took the franchise. “We probably should sue for hundreds of millions of dollars, because they probably owe us…And maybe one day we will. But we didn’t walk away from our franchise,” he expressed

Fans of the franchise are also trying to guess the horror films that may be parodied. Some X users are pushing for horror films such as Us, The Conjuring, Chucky, and Megan to be included in the comedic horror. Other fans are questioning whether the reboot will compare to the originals in light of its dark humor.

Production for the film is expected to begin in the fall of this year.
