From the grimy opening scene to the steroid-filled, synth-fueled madness that ensues, Love Lies Bleeding packs a punch. The film begins at the gym Lou runs, a sweaty place filled with hard bodies leading hard lives. Lou, portrayed in all her sulky glory by Kristen Stewart, doesn’t shy away from the unsavory parts of the job. With her bleak outlook and mysterious past, it’s no surprise that statuesque bodybuilder Jackie (O’Brian) turns her world upside down.

But Jackie has problems of her own, and from their first kiss, it occurs to viewers to ask if their instant connection is too good to be true. The gritty little town in New Mexico where our heroines find love is treacherous, made more so by Lou’s seedy family members and an off-putting FBI tail.

Combining surreal imagery, the 80s looks (windbreakers and mullets abound), and sparkling onscreen chemistry, this film is worth the watch. For fans of Killing Eve and GLOW, for those who left MaXXXine craving more, this might just be your new favorite.

Fans enthusiastically welcomed the film’s availability at home, sharing clips to celebrate.

The film’s success bodes well for director Rose Glass, previously known chiefly for Saint Maud. We also hope to see more of O’Brian, who appears in Twisters as Dani. There’s so much to appreciate about the thriller. Even the closing credits are gorgeous, as fans have touted.

The film’s availability on MAX is a part of the service’s recent deal with A24, the same agreement that brought gems like Priscilla to viewers at home.

If you need more bloody 1980s Kristen Stewart magic, there’s still hope. She’s slated to star alongside Oscar Isaac in Flesh of the Gods, a vampy thriller set in 1980s Los Angeles. We can’t help but wonder if there’s ever been a better time to be an indie horror fan.
