The film, categorized as a romantic comedy, follows a New York City matchmaker torn between the man who could be her perfect match and her complicated ex. This complicated love triangle threatens to get in the way of her business and clients.
Dakota Johnson stars as the matchmaker, alongside Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal, Zoe Winters, Marin Ireland, and Dasha Nekrasova. Producers include Christine Vachon, Pamela Koffler, and 2AM’s David Hinojosa, who previously collaborated with Song on Past Lives.

Song gained huge success with Past Lives, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023. Starring Greta Lee and Teo Yoo, the film went on to score five Golden Globe nominations, three BAFTA nominations, and two Oscar nominations. It grossed approximately $42 million.
Materialists began filming in April 2024 and wrapped in June. It’s being released by A24 in America and by Sony Pictures Releasing International for other countries.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2023, Song talked about how she had no idea she would achieve this level of success as a film creator, and how she wants to continue with this field of work for the foreseeable future.
